American Nightmare asks an important query: when a girl experiences being kidnapped and raped to legislation enforcement, what does it take for them to imagine her? An eyewitness? Bodily proof? Actually being stolen from her house in the midst of the night time? For Denise Huskins, the reply, astoundingly, was not one of the above.
Huskins’ unbelievable story is now being advised in a three-part docuseries on Netflix, which has rocketed up the charts to primary since being launched every week in the past. Whereas it is commonplace for a true-crime saga to be common on the streaming community, the story of Huskins’ ordeal is resonating on a deeper degree with girls, who’re horrified by the egregious instance of how sexual assault victims are maligned and mistreated.
In March 2015, Huskins and her then boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, have been asleep in his house in Vallejo, California, after they have been awoken by unusual lights flashing in his room. A masked intruder advised the couple they have been being robbed and that he was with a bunch who had damaged into the house. The person compelled them to drink sedatives, then advised Huskins he can be kidnapping her for 48 hours. He compelled her into the trunk of his automotive, telling Quinn to not name the police and to attend for additional directions.
American Nightmare, made by feminine filmmakers Felicity Morris and Bernadette Higgins, tells what occurred subsequent. First, the police in Vallejo have been satisfied Quinn had one thing to do with Huskins’ disappearance, interrogating him for hours and claiming that the unusual particulars of the kidnapping (the person’s outfit of a moist swimsuit and his insistence they put on goggles; the truth that Quinn handed out for hours as a result of sedatives and referred to as police the following day) have been lies.
However it was the legislation enforcement’s remedy of Huskins that has taken the collection to the subsequent degree of horror. Her mom claims within the collection that, whereas her daughter was lacking, one of many detectives advised her that – as a result of Huskins had been sexually assaulted as a toddler – it was potential she was faking her disappearance to “relive the joys of it,” a remark that left her mom “aghast.”

It publicly denounced her as a hoaxer and a fraud in a press convention a short time later, and the media started calling her the real-life Gone Woman, referring to the 2012 Gillian Flynn novel wherein a girl fakes her personal kidnapping to border her husband for her homicide. This was even though Huskins’ story matched Quinn’s precisely, and that she shared with legislation enforcement that she’d been raped by her attacker, submitting to a sexual assault examination.
